Part 3 - Dmitry Klokov, the Russian Sensation, and the lifters of the Risto Olympia Cup

Dmitry Klokov is as impressive in real life as his is in his countless youtube and instagram videos.  Dmitry is quite taller than most would imagin him.  He is a lean roughly 5'10" 105kg lifter.

His shoulders and pecs bulge through his trademark Team Winner  Russia T-shirts. He wears a manly 5' o clock shadow - scruff on his face. And, there are his eyes-- yes, they really do twinkle in person.

Dmitry is the kind of athlete that both men and women crush on.  If anything, I know countless guy lifters who have man-crushes on him -- that is some sort of bro-admiration and desire to be like him.

Simply put, Dmitry's got Charisma.
All weekend, I announced his demonstration sessions and was helping back stage where he was doing signings and photos.  Dmitry has a great personality.  He is humble, not a big ego.  He will make sure every fan waiting in line will get an autograph.  He can really work a microphone and draw the crowd in. He's generous with his attention. He seems meticulous.  He's also awesome in that he will post on social media, frequently, copiously, to his fans about all the events he is doing and the companies supporting him (note to athletes who aspire to be as famous and valued as Klokov, you need to post frequently about your sponsor, ie more than 1 crummy picture of the product a sponsor sends).

And, in addition to all his wonderful qualities,  he really likes our shoes and has a sweet line of plates. His Again Faster KlokovD bars and plates were meticulously designed by him.  I admire someone who can seek perfection, even if it means going through the hard work of multiple iterations.

And, now about his lifting...

He put on a show, every day at the Olympia Cup.  Generation Iron, the rising media giant in the fitness industry, even came over just to tape footage of him lifting.
Here are some of the lifts he did:

Every show, he warmed up in front of the audience with his partner and sidekick, Igor Zapirov.  This also made history, as this was the first time Igor has ever lifted for an audience (more below)

Klokov worked up to a:
170kg pause hang snatch
200kg pause front squat
200kg snatch grip deadlift
175kg power clean plus power jerk

Here is video of his front squats and , yes, you can see how he wraps his knees.

Igor lifting at the Risto Olympia Cup also made history. This is the first time Igor has ever lifted for a crowd.  Igor is a former world class gymnast, hold a Guinness book of world record for pulling a car with his teeth, and currently performs for Cirque Du Soleil in Las Vegas. You can tell from how he moves that he is super talented and a developed athlete. He weighed about 88kg and was close with a 110kg snatch- Klokov has only been training him for 7 months.

And the lifters...what was in it for them:
Lifting at the Risto Olympia Cup is a first class experience.  When you arrive at the venue, there is a separate weigh-in and check-in areas for all the competitors.  The Olympia generously gave 4 Weigh-ins and check-in stations JUST for OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING. Each was professionally labeled with an "Olympic weightlifting " sign.  Each competitor received a free pass to the expo, free t-shirt, and free gift bag form bodybuilding.com stocked with supplements.

The competition was held inside the expo itself.  We had a FANTASTIC position and area.  We were a stone's throw from bodybuilding.com, mucletech, generation iron... basically, all the companies anyone cared about were right by the Olympia Cup booth. And the booth was a mamouth 2000 square feet, larger than even bodybuilding.com's (if you spend anytime reading a fitness magazine, that is like a REALLY big deal).

We had ample amount of again faster weights, a signing area where both Dmitry Klokov , Igor Zapirove, the Risto Team, and Justin Compton met enthusiastic fans.  Our partner, Alaskafit productions had fitness models give out flyers.   It was classy by fitness standards.

The best part for me was the CROWD! Let's put it this way, Olympic weightlifting has never, ever been exhibited at the Olympia Expo - what do you think the crowd's reaction would be ---   it was utter amazement and fascination.   During down time,  in addition to competing, I did an expo of technique.  People, like flies to a jar of honey, came over -- taking photos, video, cheering, ooo-ing and aweing-- and, I was only doing 35kgs.  I would be surprised if theres a random video of me on a bodybuilding site snatching 35kgs.  I suppose that could be the only possible downside, or travesty- people didn't realize I was just  doing a work out...and to come to my real show the next day .

Again, for our competitors, they got the respect they deserved.  An engaging crowd watched every session.  90% of the crowd was not related to or has ever been to a weightlifting meet , they were simply bodybuilding and fitness fans who stumbled upon this interesting sport of Olympic Weightlifting.

You can see photos and video of many of the lifters who competed at the Risto Olympia Cup on the Risto Sports Facebook page and Instagram, please like and follow to see more content.

Here is video from the first women's session:

The competitors Ca-Ching:

Awards were given out to top 3 lifters in the following categories on Sinclair:  Youth men's, Youth Women's, Junior men, Junior Women, Senior Men, Senior Women, and Masters.  Each Winner (Y-SR) received several hundred dollars worth of product from MetRx and Newgrip,  high quality made in the USA medals.  All competitors received a free gift bag from bodybuilding.com and a free competition t-shirt.  With more competitors next year, and more sponsors, we desire to give out even more prizes and cash.

In case you saw that 35kg snatch of mine on bodybuilding media outlets, I'll post some videos of my actual competition lifts:

10 Reasons to Lift at the Oylmpia Cup

The Risto Olympia Cup by AlaskaFit productions is September 19 and 20th, 2014. It is an Open International Event and is sanctioned by USAW.  Registration deadline is SEPT 13, registration link is: http://www.ristosports.com/conferences/training/books/alaskafit-presents-risto-sports-olympia-cup-registration/

Why you must register:

1. Free demonstrations by Dmitry Klokov
In between lifting sessions, you get to watch Dmitry Klokov train.  He will be lifting on his new line of Klokov IWF specification bars and bumpers by AGAIN FASTER!
He will be hanging out at the lifting area to meet you, answer questions, and sign autographs! (free to registered competitors)

2. Be the first to compete on the Klokov bar and plates by Again Faster
I don't know about you, but I only do heavy Olympic lifts on IWF spec bars. And, I'm always looking for a great Olympic set at a great price.  This set was designed to IWF spec's with Dmitry Klokov by Again Faster.  Plus, Again Faster is based in the US, right in Boston.

3.  Prizes
The more who register, the more who sponsor the event , the more prize money you can win.  We plan to give out prizes based on gender and division. We will also have medals.

4. Competitor gift bags
Every competitor gets a FREE T-shirt and FREE Swag bag.   That's right be treated the way you should for lifting all those big weights.  We got you covered.

5.  It's a September meet right before the USAW qualification deadline for American Open!
Use the amazing set-up, big competition feel, crowd, and media coverage to hit new PR's. This competition is perfectly timed for planning to max out at the American Open.  See my my post on the new USAW qualifying standards for American Open.

6. Media coverage!
Get your face and name out there.  This event is Officially held in conjunction with the Mr. Olympia weekend -- you know what that means-- tons of media will be on the competition floor.  Did you know that NBC Sports covers the Olympia?

7. Amazing sponsors
Ok, the Risto Olympia Cup is such a premier even that Klokov is coming... well, guess what, here's some of the amazing sponsors who have lined up to support this event, so you can have an amazing experience:  MetRX New Grip , Again Faster , Broz's gym , Alaska Fit , and Risto Sports

8. It's in Vegas!
The event is in Las Vegas. There will be plenty to do and to eat between lifting sessions.  Vegas is extremely accessible from the LA area as well.  Perfect excuse to go to Vegas.

9.  It's an official event of the Olympia
This is awesome because the event is inside the Olympia Expo.  As a competitor, you get free access to the expo!   The expo is like trick or treat for lifters. You're surrounded by other strength sport events as well as supplement companies that are basically throwing free samples of protein bars at you.  Its a crazy fun time. The lifting area is right in the midst of all the action. We're next to the strongman competition, and a few steps away from huge booths like bodybuilding.com and muscletech.

10.  Meet other celebrities at the Risto Olympia Cup competition
UPDATED 9/7/2014:  IFBB pro, Justin Compton, one of the youngest pro's ever, will be at the Risto Olympia booth all weekend!
As you may know from my other posts, Risto Sports and AlaskFit have worked with the biggest names in the bodybuilding world such as Kai Greene, Dana Linn Bailey, Mike O'Hearn, and George Farah.  Look to meet stars of the bodybuilding and fitness world right at our venue.  Additionally, several international weightlifters have expressed interest in attending.

USA Weightlifting's new National Qualifying totals, a good thing

USAW  just released a new qualification totals for National competitions.  Well, more than new totals, USAW has put in a new system for qualifying for National competitions.

Per their website, www.usaweightlifting.org , they describe the unprecedented number of entries at the 2014 National Championships driving the needs to raise the standards at Nationals.

A lot of our athletes at Risto Sports expressed concern and confusion.  While the system for qualifying is now a bit more complex than just hitting a total, I believe it can be boiled down to a couple of things:
- Meet the Candidate National total and you'll be locked into a National meet
OR
- Be top 15 in your weight class while exceeding the minimum standards

So, yes, if you're like me and already exceed the Candidate National totals in the weight classes you intend to compete in and you're higher than 15th in the country, you got no worries.   In almost every weight class, the candidate national total will put you in the top 5 in your class.

The good thing for your is you'll never have to decide how low or high to put your announced total for fear of lifting in a B session.   There will be fewer fake announced entry totals on National start lists.   For example, in 2013, a particular former CrossFit Games competitor listed their 58kg Nationals entry total as over 200kg, when they had not totaled above 149? in USAW competitions.  On the other hand, there are plenty of A session athletes who low-ball their total.  As an athlete, its not my concern, it is my coaches, I just find it annoying (hey, I always say what I mean and mean what I say).

I predict local competitions will be raised to a higher standard, especially as the site mentions possibility of regional championships.  This then will also mean that all LWC's or regions will keep records that count.  For example, in New England, I am so fortunate that my local New England LWC keeps meticulous records going back to the 60's, at least, and they carry records across weight class changes too.

Additionally, Nationals will always mean something.  I have won several National Competitions and medaled in more than I can remember. It really sucks when you realize that athletes in a weight class 3 classes higher than you lifted less than you did to win or medal in their class. Trust me, there have been a few occasions at a NATIONAL level competition when I lifted 63kg and could have won or medaled as a super heavyweight with the same total.

Recognition that you lift something respectable regardless of how the qualification systems change. So, in 2012, I dissected on this blog faults in the 2012 National Ranking system, almost by accident. I discovered my sinclair was higher than people ranked 7 placements higher than me. Well, with the new National ranking qualifying standards and National competitions qualifying totals, there is less of a chance of this happening.  From an engineer's stand point (some one who does a lot of statistics, non-linear analyses, etc), I would say the 2014 qualification systems are so much better-- their only weakness is the super heavyweight category. There is a much bigger spread between the top 3 superheavy weights in the world and supers who are ranked 4th-10th.  So, if you can do a 10th in the world total as a super female, you're chances are far  lower of medaling than if you did a 10th in the world total as a 63 for example.

For lifters that can do the minimum standard and are not in the top 15 of  their weight class, this will make qualifying a matter of how many people decide to sign-up. It will be interesting to see how quickly USAW will be able to respond to dole out the final spots. It will likely add some administrative burden, which is a small trade-off for hosting the best possible National meets.

On the positive, it will force everyone to get better and to improve their lifting.

The cut off for the American Open is October 1.  Check our the Olympia Cup , which is already scheduled for September 19&20 in conjunction with the Olympia, to up your total at a high value competition, plus Dmitry Klokov will be doing a free demonstration there . Register  here:

The Druzhba Games were held in 1984 by Eastern bloc countries not participating in LA.

Again, overall, Bulgarian athletes were humble or, rather, didn't "have an attitude" in the gym.
